Orange County is famous for its beaches and surf, but if you have a baby or toddler, the best beaches are the ones that are calm. Add a playground nearby and it’s a perfect beach day. As a local OC mom, these are the beaches I recommend to other parents when they ask where to take a baby or toddler for their first beach day.
What Makes a Beach “Baby-Friendly” in the First Place
Before diving into the list, here’s the criteria:
- Protected water: harbor, bay or lagoon style beaches instead of the open ocean
- Shallow, gradual entry: no sudden drop offs
- Little to no current: so being in the water feels safe, not scary
- Nearby parking and restrooms
- A playground, grassy area or other amenities near by
With that in mind, here are Orange County’s best calm water beaches for babies, toddlers and young kids:
Seabridge Park + Beach (Mother’s Beach), Huntington Harbour
Located in Huntingon Harbor, Mother’s Beach has little to no waves. Boats pass by slowly in the channel and there’s a playground nearby.
Marina Park, Newport Beach
This is one of the most popular baby beach spots in Orange County. The water is calm, bay water and there’s a lighthouse themed playground right next to the sand.
Baby Beach, Dana Point Harbor
Another very popular baby beach spot with calm water. It’s also very close to the Ocean Institute, so it’s an easy add-on activity.
Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort, Newport Beach
A RV resort with a public beach: there’s a pirate themed playground nearby, as well as an inflatable aquatic park for the older kids during the summer.
Honorable Mentions: Calm Water, Fewer Amenities
These spots have the same calm water, making it safe for babies and toddlers, but they might not have a playground, restrooms or other things to do nearby. Still worth knowing about:
Pirate’s Cove, Corona del Mar
A small protected cove right by the parking lot at Corona del Mar State Beach. It’s a short walk in but you have to go up and over a rocky area in order to reach the beach – which is not ideal for babies and smaller toddlers.
10th Street Beach, Newport Beach
More low-key and quieter than the main pier area but on the bay side so you still get gentle water with no waves. Don’t expect much more than sand and calm water though.
Bayside Beach, Newport Beach
Bay facing with gentle water but like 10th Street Beach, don’t expect more than sand and calm water.
North Star Beach, Newport Beach
More of a small watercraft launch spot but still great for babies and toddlers.
A Few Tips Before You Go
- Check the tide schedule
- Bring your own shade
- Rinse stations aren’t available everywhere (just a heads up)
- Arrive early on weekends
Building a Life Near These Beaches
